I spent a couple of days with my parents and relat I spent a couple of days with my parents and relatives for Obon at a house where my grandparents used to live in the northern part of Nagano.

During Obon, we pray for and welcome the spirits of ancestors from the grave to the home altar as a tradition. We set a fire on the bark of birch in front of the grave and sung a prayer: "Our ancestors, please come, follow the fire, please come." We did the same after returning home.

I'm not religious at all, but my parents always urge me to pray, and I’ve always hated that they made me do so in a way, since my childhood. I have always doubted the point of them urging me, someone who doesn't believe in the existence of spirits, to pray. However, I do think of my late grandfathers, and am thankful for the countless unknown ancestors.

These days, I feel somewhat sad every time I see my parents getting older. Everybody gets older and gets closer to death since we were born. My parents are not so old yet but not so young anymore.

After seeing my father placing a glass of beer for his late father and praying at the altar, I also put my palms together to pray and to show that I would do the same in the future, so they don't need to worry about being forgotten.

That's the point of Obon anyway: thinking of family regardless of whether we are religious or not.

It will occur 322 years from now next time.

I had a kind of fulfilling sensation by imagining a lot of people looking up at the same time to share the event.

Rage, fear, and anxiety are filling my mind and ch Rage, fear, and anxiety are filling my mind and choking my heart.
Two years ago, I had an opportunity to interview war victims - Atomic bomb survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, for the articles on the 75th WWII anniversary for National Geographic Magazine, as an assistant. Words told by them keep coming up in my mind.
I asked what our generation should do to not repeat the tragedy, to Shoso Kawamoto who lost his parents and sisters by the atomic bombing on Hiroshima, became an orphan when he was 11years-old, now testifying his war experience as a volunteer at Hiroshima Peace Memorial museum replied, “Dialogues with others, which we couldn't hold at that time. Speak your mind and listen to others. That’s what I insist your generation do for the peace.”

The late Emiko Okada who was 8 years old in 1945, was escaping in the fire triggered by the heat waves of the atomic bomb, asked for help by a boy stuck under debris reaching out his hand to her in the fire, couldn’t stop and save him.
She told me she always regretted that she couldn’t help him.
By the time the interview finished in the early evening in February, the sky in the west was filled with vivid orange light, it’s so beautiful, isn’t it? I said, “I hate sunset light because the color reminds me of the sky in the fire on that day.” she replied.
It is so painful for me to imagine even the beautiful sunset light made her suffer last 76 years.
It must never be allowed to invade other countries or regions, attack a nuclear plant or imply the use of Atomic bombs.
Here in Japan, former prime minister Shinzo Abe suggested Japan should consider a nuclear sharing arrangement with the US, against Japan’s non-nuclear weapons policy.

What I can do now or you might as well is speaking my (your) mind up, dialogues with family, friends, and partners.
Not let fascism and nationalism invade your mind.
(And donation!)

To not the seeds of peace let die out.
Peace is not something that just grows naturally, we need to cultivate it.

Thank you those people who plan demonstrations, those who speak up in front of people both from Ukraine and Russia, and other people who wish for peace. #ukraine #antiwar #japan
